Street art, Rione Sanità

One of the things that helped to convert the negativity surrounding this district, was an active pursuit and use of street art.

This huge work is on a building in the Piazza Sanità. It represents the faces of children as the hope of the future.

On the side of a church is “RESIS-TI-AMO” (a mix of “resistance” and “I love you”). The work was inspired by a true story and describes a Neapolitan couple who  overcame a terrible illness with care and love.

And here, with yet another automotive victim of Napoli’s traffic, is a cheery example of what you can do with some brightly coloured paint.

  1. How much better is real street art than ‘tagging’ and ‘graffiti’.

  3. Such great photos. All are so unique! And I have to say it, but it beats the graffiti covering the walls….. which drives me crazy most days. thanks for the sharing these photos. xx

  4. I love seeing these on buildings. The artists put a lot of thought into the stories they’re telling.

  5. Very talented people out there. I particularly like how that one with the splash of red incorporates a shadow figure in the surround. And every car captured in the shots has a dinged panel. Reminds me of my last visit to Rome.

    • I hadn’t noticed that about the splash of red, gabby one. You wouldn’t want a shiny brand new car in these cities, would you?

      • Taking another look at it on the bigger screen of the laptop I am even more impressed. At first glance it appears that the sash is just around the distinct woman, with the inference there is a baby being cradled in there. When you look at it again, you see the sash is also around the shadow figure, as if she in turn is cradling the mother and baby. Very impressive.

When last in Rome, hubby and I were astounded at the amount of Mercedes, BMW and other vehicles we would consider in the luxury bracket, with smashed panels. Possibly due to the way they just park them any old how. Amazing!

Each of these is so different , but wonderful in its own right! Of course the bright colors are wonderful….but the circle of children’s faces is so poignant .
