It doesn’t take long to find diverse scenes of street life as you wander around in the historic centre of Naples.
I had never seen a shoe-shine stand in the streets anywhere before.
The music they made was so cheery and energetic.
This reminded me of the street cleaners in Venice, except here the broom heads are made of plastic.
The boredom of a street stall owner, who has seen it all before.
A university graduate in Naples with her mother, aunt and friends. Gina has her degree in Languages (Chinese), and hopes to become an interpreter. Brava, Gina.
Leave the mail under the door. Thanks.
A voice over a loudspeaker brought me to the window, to see a vendor of fruit and vegetables plying his trade on the narrow street. And, he’s driving an Ape!
No digital scales for this fellow.
just saying hello – and wishing you well (again)_ and not sure why I did not comment here before – but that make shift shoe-shine photo is extra curious because I hardly see them anywhere anymore. They used to have stalls at airports and all over the States – but almost all gone – at least in my view….

Yes, I recall seeing them in Adelaide, South Australia, but that was back in the late 1960s.

I don’t blame you! I hope to get back to finish my abruptly truncated visit. I had many ideas from your blog in my notebook, but only got to see a few lf them.

I hope you do get another chance to visit soon. I always worry that Naples will change, develop too much, and lose some of its character.

Hey mate, I feel like I have been hit by one them. I took a wee tumble and have some rather spectacular fractures, so am heading back to Oz a tad early! That’s all for now, I am going onto radio silence.

We’ll have to go to Naples – at yearly intervals my husband expresses a longing for a street shoe-cleaner. Love all these scenes (even the bored stall-holder –one of my favourite Venice photos is of a very wet and disgruntled gondolier). We have re-booked last year’s cancelled few days in Venice for May!

I’m heading back to Oz as soon as I get flights. I had a darn accident. 😣

Oh no, I’m so sorry, are you hurt? Let us know how things are when you can.

Yes, a couple of interesting fractures of the elbow and shoulder. I see an orthpoedic surgeon in my future. 😊

That sounds wretched for you. Is the orthopedic surgeon in Naples? I presume they have been set there in Naples and you face further remedial work when you get home. Don’t answer this, just do only what you must until it is sorted out. I’m wishing you the smoothest possible recovery.

OMG, I could post almost the same shots from Oaxaca! Love the similarities. 😉

It just takes a bit of shoe leather, or a seat with a caffè or vino.

I like the idea of coffee and a seat with a view!

A great post. Shoe shiners are all over the place in Argentina. Those shots are so wonderful of life lived in Naples. I have even seen one in Sydney . Problem is that many Aussies wear thongs which are difficult to polish.

We humans are fun to watch, for sure. And, they’re watching us as we watch them!
Yes, a thong-shine stand would not make much money.

Of course in NZ a thong is something else and a thong-shine (I would imagine) could possibly make quite a bit of money!

Leave it to Yvonne to find a mask shop in Naples, too…

A great set, Yvonne. Your shoeshine comment reminds me of that Daguerre 1839 photograph.

Now I have to see if I can find what you referred to, Derrick. (Or, for those afflicted by grammatical pedantry: That to which you referred).

Sorry – I didn’t want to make you work, but neither did I want to press you to look at this one which you had already commented on – sorry, again – on which you had already commented 🙂 https://derrickjknight.com/2016/09/30/focus-on-history/

Hey, you’re going all Pommy on me with the “Sorries”. 😊
Now I ‘ll go all Canadian on you and say “Sorry” about my short term memory, which had allowed me to forget that excellent post. Thank you so much for the link, mate. (There, that’s the Aussie contingent heard from, for now.)
