“Why don’t you come and join us for a game of indoor carpet bowls? You might like it.” Thus spake Margaret at the end of the exercise class for the out of condition and woefully slothful.
So, I rolled up to the local Lawn Bowls Club House one Thursday afternoon, with the idea of watching and seeing if these folks were up to my demanding standards. Imagine my surprise when I was thrust into a team, a bowl was put into my hand and I was given the complex instructions “Try to get this down to the end, near the little white ball, without it going off the carpet.” Easy, eh?
This is definitely a game for the prideful, who’ll soon be brought down to earth with a thud. Luckily, my team members and the others were all good sports, quick to forgive blunders or cheer a fluky good shot. And so it came to pass, I was hooked on the game.
We are not a youthful group. Some of the people need a quad walking stick, one has an oxygen tank as a constant companion, another has to be reminded why we’re here, and which colour ball to use. But, my word, can they make that bowling ball do what they want. I don’t think I’ll ever be as good as they are, but it sure is a fun way to spend a few hours in convivial company.
This is a view of the carpet, with 8 out of the 16 balls used still on the mat. It looks like the black team has one at least “shot” for this end.
In this end, the brown team has at least 4 bowls closer to the white jack, so they’ll score 4. That wasn’t my team.
But wait, it’s nearly the end of two complete games, and smoko awaits the athletes. Click the link to find out what Smoko means.
Maybe I just like carpet bowls because of the yummy cake?
If you have a burning desire to see some bowlers in action, here’s a highly serious game from Sicamous, BC, Canada.
This looks like fun Yvonne, especially the cake part. When I lived in Dallas, a new neighbor introduced the Sunday afternoon beer drinking boys to bocce. I never developed much skill, but it was a grand excuse to have a beer. ~James

There is a large Italian population here in Myrtleford, they have a Social Club and play bocce. I should get to know that mob, practice speaking Italian, drink wine and play bocce!

I REALLY like every bit of it, even though I’m really very poor at the game. never mind, maybe I’ll get better. ❤

It’s more about the fellowship and friendship than the game anyways! 🙂
And, yes, you will get better! ❤

Sounds fun! Are you going to try lawn bowls too?
I too had to get a mouse for my new laptop as I found that with the touchpad I couldn’t control things getting bigger or smaller when I didn’t want them to.

Hi, Caroline. If they have social lawn bowls, I’d certainly be up for that. But, not the serious world of pennants bowls, thanks.
Are you enjoying your well deserved break? How is Mimi?

I would definitely go for the cake! Loved the descriptions of your team members. Well as long as they are superstar carpet bowlers! 🙂

I have a hunch that quite a few of them have been competitive lawn bowlers in a previous life. I can see me with my Zimmer frame in a few years, eye on the cake instead of the game.

Things to love about this post: 1. Sicamous (pronounced Sick-a-moose). 2. Smocko – handy word for when I visit the Falklands 3. Lawn bowling! OMG. I LOVE it. A favourite game in our family and in the interior town of BC (Canada) where my family lives, it is a game all generations play with equal gusto and the most skilled are those over 70. We drink beer when we play (except for the kids under 19, who drink Coke). The BEST game! Municipal parks all have outdoor lawnbowling greens.

Good morning, Canada. I was pleasantly surprised to find that video from Sicamous. And, where has lawn bowls been all my life? It’s gratifying to hear of something the whole family can enjoy. Do you curl, by any chance?
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, I don’t curl, but I understand it’s a social thing, too. And women curlers of a certain generation curl wearing pleated plaid skirts which I think is natty and would curl just for the skirt!

I tried to comment before – twice and nothing happened and so I’ll just say I hope you enjoy carpet bowls. I said a lot more but I’ve been digging a drain and I’m too tired to think

Hello, John. I’m sorry you had problems with leaving a comment, that’s been happening a bit today on dear old WordPress. Yes, I am enjoying the bowls and the company of some energetic, funny people.
Digging a drain? That’s not much fun on a Saturday, or any day.
I just looked in the spam folder and found heaps of comments there, including yours. I’m off to read them now.

My parents enjoy going to indoor bowls every Wednesday night at the local Church hall. I must ask if they have a nice supper afterwards. I do know they have a raffle every week and the winner must supply next week’s prize, to the value of $3. With such a large spend, the prizes are amazing and my father wins regularly – potholders, tea towels, dish washing brushes and all sorts of paraphernalia.

I’ll have to see if I can install that widget, M.L. The cat is asleep on my lap, so it may take longer than it should. 🙂

When I first cam to Australia, I was amused to see bowls on TV as a sport. The program was called ‘Jack High’. I’ve played a few times and it is quite fun.

It’s a mighty popular game in Australia, long-legged one. Some people take it very seriously. That’s maybe not the likes of us.

The game itself seems similar to curling and I imagine it to be like lawn bowling only indoors. Glad you’re having fun.

Yes, it’s a lot like curling without the cold nose and slippery ice.

Don’t know what happened to my earlier comment. The cakes look very nice. I would be tempted to snitch a couple while everyone is bending down to bowl.

I’ll put your idea to the test next week, but no doubt I’ll be caught and shamed! 🙂

I read this during smoko. The good thing about carpet bowls is that it can be played even if it’s raining!

The touch pad on my ‘puta is so sensitive it moves things just if I huff on it so I write a comment and the screen changes and it’s all gone so I haf ta do it all again. My comment; Dad said he wouldn’t join a bowls club because all the old guys who took up bowling died soon after. But I don’t think that’s true, so you just go right ahead and don’t listen to him.

I’m none the wiser after watching the video – though I understand it is a game both complex and addictive………. Siddy and I perambulate past a petanque/bowls club on our morning walk. Siddy often tries to break in – he has been successful on a couple of occasions – because he can hear people behind that high fence and they are having FUN; and Siddy is a fellow who likes to have FUN!! Once I was alerted to his successful attempt by the howls of anguish and cries of ‘Get that bloody animal off…..’ Sadly we have never been invited in to join the FUN!! 🙂 But we are pleased you are having some!

Here’s your nice long comment, contented one. I’m glad it was somewhere I could find it, it would have been a shame to lose it forever. I’ll bet you’d love petanque. Tranquilise Siddy one day …

Now my old dad said he would never join a bowls club because most people he knew died within a few years and he didn’t want to push his luck. So be careful.
