There are a number places where you can go under/through the wall that surrounds historical Lucca. Most of these share pedestrian and motorised access.
But this underpass, at Baluardo (bastion) S. Paolino is one that is for pedestrians only. Is this the sort of place that attracts you, or would you find another place to get to the other side of the wall?
I’d use it but I’d like to hold someone’s hand while I did. Great photos.

I’m sure I could find a volunteer for that task!

I bicycled on the wall but totally missed the underpass 😒 Reason enough to go back!!

The opening isn’t obvious, no wonder you missed it. It must have been fun to ride a bike around the wall.

Hmm, I’d think twice.

It really does wander around a bit. As I went through it today, I was thinking “Now, those Krazy Kanadian Kids would turn this into a big adventure.”

I’ll rent some bikes for us, there are no hills, it’s cool, you don’t have to wear a helmet, there are bars every 10 meters. Hurry up!

Bars every 10 meters?! Forget the bikes I will crawl from spot to spot. 🙂

Thank you for your nice comment.

You know that I give that idea a resounding “Yes/ Oui”, Michel. I’ll speak to the City Fathers/Mothers today. ❤

I’m impressed there are no people in these photos. Did you have to wait long to get empty tunnel photos?

I was all alone, it took me a moment to realise this was a route under the wall, et

I would use this in a flash. I love love love tunnels. I would rather spend a day in an old castle full of tunnels and towers than go to Disneyland.

I’m glad for the lighting but as a sufferer of claustrophobia I was a little unsure of the steel bars at the end. But be that as it may, you certainly have captured the atmosphere – as Peg has said.

The steel bars and the rattle of chains, moan of someone locked up … it all added to the fun, John.
My son has warned me to be sure the trains were running from Broadmeadows to Wangaratta when I get home, that little thought had never crossed my mind!

Thank you! Sunday morning, 6:30. I’d hoped to catch the XPT from Broadmeadows at 8:54. I looked at the V-Line site, and it seems OK at this stage.

Just Rang XPT. All OK. Everything running as it should.

I’m not big on tunnels and being underground, but these are really beautifully lighted. Still, I’d make sure I had a flashlight with me, I think.

Or the light on your mobile phone, a.w. You’re right, it would be mighty dark if there was a power failure.

I never went to Lucca Yvonne – I would have loved those tunnels and would probably have spent ages poking around all the byways and corners. Isn’t it amazing there is no graffiti!

I was just thinking the same thing today, contented one, the walls all over the city are relatively free of graffiti. Quite a change from Venice.

Oh, I watched a lady doing weaving on a loom today. I don’t know how she can throw and catch that shuttle so easily! Is weaving one of your crafts?

No! I tried it back in the 70’s and had zero finesse at it. I admire people who can coordinate their hands just so – and have the visual perspicacity to imagine how threads of differing colours and shades will emerge from different warps and wefts! It’s an art isn’t it!

I recently read the novel The Lady and the Unicorn, and couldn’t imagine how in the world mere humans could produce those large pieces of art!

Is that the tapestries woven around the five senses you are referring to Yvonne? I didn’t know there was a book! Aren’t they mind boggling! But then I remember standing somewhere in the Vatican looking at the wall paining of St Peter’s escape from prison and wondering the same thing – that impressed me more than the ceiling!

Yes, it’s written by Tracy Chevalier, I liked it!
Artists are driven people, I think. Many of them didn’t do it for the money, it seems.

The only people who make money from art are the dealers who buy and sell after the demise of the artist. I’ve read Tracy Chevalier before – was she ‘The Girl with a Pearl Earring’ Yes, she was. I just checked on Google 🙂

No, I don’t print my photos. However, I have 2 photos from this trip, one of fog and one of a sunset (both in Venice) which I hope will be of good enough quality to do biggish prints. Cross your fingers!

We stayed outside the wall for our last visit to Lucca, and found the tunnels easy and safe! A far cry from the little sotoporteghi of Venice!
LikeLiked by 1 person
They’re certainly a change from Venice. There’s a santuario I’ve spotted from atop the wall, not far outside the city. If it’s not raining in the next couple of days, I want to go and have a look at it. But, I’ll bet it won’t be open!

I actually happen to like those little sotoporteghi in Venice. Some of them are very interesting.
But I know that once I’m living there I will need to venture beyond….maybe.
