I don’t know how many times I’ve walked through Campo Santo Stefano in the years I’ve come to Venice. I do know that it wasn’t until I read this post saint-Stephen on David Lown’s blog that I knew I’d never clapped eyes on the bas -relief of the Saint himself!
So, the very next time I ventured out my door, I turned left and saw him with my own eyes.
David comments that Stephen was stoned to death, so the main attribute you will see in depictions of him are stones. This bas-relief with two stones on the saint’s head led one young client of David’s to say it reminded him of Mickey Mouse!
While I was in an observant mood, I also noticed this sculpture of the Madonna and Child just a short distance from Saint Stephen. Thanks, David, for making sure I looked up.

It’s no wonder these people were made into saints. They all died horrible deaths. My favourite is Saint Sebastian, who died after being shot by arrows. He survived the first time so they did it again. Ghastly.
It really does pay to look up. There are tiny treasures hidden up there.

Poor Santo Stefano, there’s a tiny clutch of people who will never think of him without thinking of Mickey Mouse.
It’s just after 9am here, I wonder how lively the square in front of the apartment will be, tonight? I think it’ll be heaving with people!

Stephen’ s statue looks ancien type Middle age . The virgin is certainly more recent . True art work but look at the support around . Repairs are needed .

The Scuola dei Laneri (wool merchants and artisans) or Scuola di San Stefano, San Marco 3467, Campiello San Stefano. Read more here: veneziamuseo.it/terra/san_marco/Vidal/vid_sd_stefano.htm There could be two more stones at the figure’s shoulders. The headgear of the kneeling figures is interesting. They are not priests or monks, who are usually found kneeling in such depictions.

Yes, that’s a mature looking mother and baby. And, I was struck once again, when looking at nativity scenes around the city, that baby was extraordinarily large!
