On guard in Florence

If you happen to walk through the Piazza di San Giovanni at just the right time, you’ll be treated to the sight of the police horses being readied for their day of patrolling the area near the Duomo. The historic centre of Florence doesn’t seem to have a high crime rate, so the horses and their riders generally have a rather quiet day. Their main problem seems to be the crush of tourists and their ever ready cameras.

  5. Very handsome horses. I would think the policemen chosen for that job think themselves very fortunate. Have a lovely weekend.

Really liked Ralph’s comment when I saw it a few moments ago – so it sent me to a drawing – I’ll e-mail it to you!

  9. We saw them in Florence. Happy memories. I think they were guarding LV from over zealous shoppers.

  10. I wonder if the policemen compete for that particular shift. It sounds a bit cushy!

  11. You have reminded me that I saw this routine on my visit to Florence but it was in the Piazza della Signoria where we were having an early cup of coffee in a bar. I didn’t take a picture.

  13. I love those horses. I saw them…well, their compatriots, when I was in Firenze in 2004 and was not fast enough to get their picture….it would have been a nice one of their lovely rear ends as they were headed away from me.
Four seasons! You want four seasons! Good for you! Although I was hoping you were preparing to apply for that dratted visa to live in Venice (or Firenze).

    • I’ve got a photo of some good rose bush fertiliser, courtesy of the horses!

Yes, I’m well over the tropical weather!

      • I think I’d be well over the snakes that seem to like that tropical weather. I’ve seen too many episodes of “Househunters International” in you part of the world.
I’ll take a lovely horse….rosebush fertilizer and all….over a snake any day. I like my pets with fur….or horsehair(not the sofa kind)

  14. Those horsemen look the part, don’t they? No wonder the cameras are clicking. How does it feel to be back Yvonne?
