“I’ll keep my eyes open” — perhaps that’s where Katharine Hepburn went wrong 🙂 She was not actually blinded (even temporarily), but she did suffer from a chronic eye infection that made her eyes water thereafter (allegedly). There are at least two slightly different versions of the story (it’s Venice, how could it be else?), one of which can be found here: http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/276746|0/Summertime.html Another version can be found in David Lean’s biography, where it is stated that Hepburn used to regularly swim in the Grand Canal, saying, in other words, that it may not have been just the fall into the canal for the film that caused the eye infection.

What type of work does this boat do Yvonne? It’s so cute just resting there in the canal.

It looks like the type of boat you’d see laden with goods of various types, perhaps cement for renovations, or supplies for smaller supermarkets, etc. I’ve also seen such boats loaded with bags of soiled linens from hotels, restaurants, etc.
Boats take the place of the trucks we’re used to seeing on our roads, and the canals are the roads of Venice.

I love the photo, but a question; does anyone ever swim in the canals?

That’s a good question, suchled. Swimming in the canals is highly inadvisable. Even though the water comes in and out with the tides, and thus the canals get a little bit of a flush, there is still a certain amount of sewage and other effluent that is drained straight into some of them.
There’s a photo in this post that reveals just that event happening:
I cringe when I see tourists dangle their bare feet into the waters of a canal.

In the film Summertime, Katherine Hepburn falls into a canal. Apparently she was temporarily blinded. I wonder if Lord Byron suffered any ill effects after his swim in the Grand Canal?
