We laud the painters and sculptures who decorated churches of centuries gone by, but how often do we know who designed and created the floors?

Every time I am in Basilica San Marco, I marvel over the magnificent and varied patterns and designs in the floors. I always think that if one could sew (and alas I can’t), the patterns and colors would make beautiful quilts.
They (the floors) are sometimes more inspirational than the paintings!

It’s so good to be seeing these from my computer at home! Very beautiful. I met a woman last year in Florence when she was photographing a puddle on the sidewalk. She made me aware of the things you miss if you don’t look down. Thanks for these.
